This ancient temple is considered to be more than 2500 Years old as per the available historical accounts. Mythologicaly it is associated with krythayuga. Almighty, Lord Shiva is in the form of lingam and is named as THIRUMANI CHERAI UDAYAR (highly decorative and attractive Shiva). The Goddess Parvati is named THIRUMANI NAYAGI (pleasant and blissful). It is regarded as an abode of eternity (Mukthi) & also southern kailash
This Holy place is highly connected, with mythology and also deeply associated with the legendary Rishis such as Sadhu Nandeeshwara, Siladara, Agastya and other Rishis & Saints.
Nandi, son of saint Siladara performed penance seeking blessings and acceptance of Lord Shiva. It is from this Holy Hill Periyamalai that Lord Shiva blessed Nandi to be His Vehicle, for the first time. Since then, this Hill is venerated and worshipped by the Saints and Devatas as a sacred place.
Worshipping Lord Nandeeshwara of this temple is regarded as very sacred as He grants the prayers. The village was called “Nandipuravinnagaram” (Sky high village, Nandipuram) as Periyamalai was very tall once upon a time
Mythology has it that the wedding of Lord Shiva with Parvathi was performed at Mount Kailash, the eternal and ethereal abode of Lord Shiva. All the Devas, Rishis, Saints, along with Lord Vishnu, Brahma and their consorts assembled to witness the marriage. The northern part Himalayan Mountain, sunk in whereas the Southern part has gone up.
As desired by Lord Shiva, Agastya Risha stood on top of the Mount and hence the Mount sub-merged into the earth. Rishi Agastya witnessed the marriage of Lord Shiva with Parvathi from the top of this Mount. Therefore the prayers of the devotees for their marriages are getting fulfilled.
The fragrant Lavender flower which once adorned the Jadha of Lord Shiva was cursed by Him as it gave a false witness in favour of Lord Brahma in the contest between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma while Lord Shiva stood in a fire form between the earth and the sky.
To get rid of the curse the Lord blessed the flower to become Holy Lavender tree atop the hillock and hence the tree has became the Sthala Vruksha (Temple Tree). This tree is evergreen and surviving in rocks without water.
A river Varaha was flowing here. On the banks of this river Rishis had their hermitage and chanting Pranava Mandira (OM NAMAHSHIVAYA) to attain eternity.
Rishi Siladara performed penance. Lord Shiva appeared before the saint, and asked him what boon he wants. Rishi requested Lord to attain Mukthi along with the mortal body (sthula sarira) Lord granted his prayer. Joyfully when saint was traversing in the sky, Rishi Narada intercepted and enlightened the Rishi that he cannot enter the heaven with his mortal body. There is a inner secret of his birth. He has to return to earth to commence the Amavasya Thithi to redeem the bondaged soul from their sins. Thus the Rishi started the Amavasya (offering prayers to departed souls) by wearing the Holy Grass Minji. This word Minji has become Inji and now it is the name of the village itself i.e. INJIMEDU
Saint Devadootha prayed Lord Shiva for many years. Lord appeared before him and granted his prayer. Hence Saint Devadootha anointed the Shivalinga in ancient times on top of the Mountain. The Linga was made out of herbal plants.
Lord Shiva created a Holy Ganga on top of the mountain as the Rishis prayed for water for their use. This Holy spring is perennial and is very sweet and cures many diseases.
The temple was patronised by successive kings in olden days. However some 400 years ago it was annihilated by the Bramini Sultans.
Lord Shiva has chosen Sri. Raja and his son Sri.Perumal and daughter-in-law Smt.Lalitha Perumal to reconstruct this ancient temple in Kaliyuga.
Therefore Almighty Lord appeared in the form of a Saint and blessed His devotee Raja when he was 16 years old. Since then he had become a staunch devotee.
Though a greater part of the mountain is under the earth the existence of a spring is a miracle.
There are many Holy trees on top of the hill without water
There is a King Cobra which often appears before the Lord and gives darshan to the devotees. The sight of the Cobra itself is a boon which redeems the sin.
Sri. I.R.Perumal son of Raja Swamiji was also blessed by the Lord from his Childhood. When he was just 11 years old he saw at the midnight a glowing Goddess wearing glittering jewels where as seven other deities carrying lights and going round and round the Goddess.
On another occasion when he was just 12 years old, he was in the midst of whirlwind and torrential rain. He fell Prostrated towards the hillock and prayed of Lord to save his life and bless him to construct the temple.
Surprisingly just then his mother came there and took him to their house even though the incident took place 1 km away from his house. He came to know later through a Swamiji that mother is none other than Goddess Parvathi who came in the form of his mother Smt. Chinnammal at a crucial hour of desperation.
When Sri. Raja Swamiji was 95 years old he was staying with his son Sri. Perumal at Bangalore. A Swamiji visited his house and blessed all the members of the family. Raja Swamiji was not knowing Hindi and the Swamiji was not knowing Tamil but surprisingly both of them exchanged their greetings as if they know each other. Thus the Lord gave darshan to them in the form of a Swamiji to construct an ancient Shiva Temple. At the age of 96 Raja Swamiji attained Mukthi. His body was buried at the foot-hills and a Samadhi was constructed for him.
The son of the Swamiji Sri. Perumal stopped the construction of the temple which was just then started as the death is not auspicious to continue the work. At that time two Swamijis visited the house of Mr. Perumal at his residence in Bangalore. Smt. Perumal popularly known as Arulvakku (foreteller) Annai and Sri. Perumal received them.
On enquiry the Swamijis told them not to stop the temple construction as there is no inauspicious time because of the death of his father as he already reached the golden feet of Lord Shiva. And also advised them how to construct the temple and the Agama Shastra to be followed while constructing the temple. They made it very clear that these two Swamijis are well known to the couple and these two Swamijis have just then returning from the construction site in person. The Swamijis blessed the couple and vanished in no second from their house. It is no wonder that the Lord in the guise of Swamijis gave them darshan.
There are several such miracles in the life of Sri. Perumal and his wife Smt. Lalitha Perumal. The God and Goddess saved them from many accidents leading to death and shown their darshan in different forms. They got the vibrant power since then and whatever they utter are coming true.
Mr. Perumal got the distinction of writing poems instantaneously in glory of Gods and Goddess like the 63 adopted saints of Lord Shiva. His books have been released at Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram, Thiruvannamalai and Periyamalai. He backed the International award for his poetry. He has written so for 15 books and submitted to the galore of Lord.
When the Temple was under construction the grandson of St. Raja Swamiji Sri. Vinayagam alias Pillaiyar slipped down from a height of 15 feet from the roof of the Temple onto the rocks below, but miraculously survived.
A labourer Smt. Mala aged 35, fell from 45 feet of the temple under construction while exchanging bricks. However she also miraculously saved by Lord from her death.
The manager has instructed the girls to keep themselves away from the temple work during the menstruation period. But, due to poverty a girl of 23 years engaged in the exchange of bricks during the menstruation period. Even though the bricks have been exchanged among 40 labourers she alone complained of scorpion bite. She later accepted her mistake. It has become a standing instruction for the labourers to maintain purity. After this incident all the workers and labourers started praying Lord before starting their daily work and maintained punctually with devotion.
Disregarding instructions that meat should not be eaten within the temple premises, the Shilpi (Chief Sculptor) and his Labourers began cooking fish. Suddenly they started complaining of a sensation of a snake coiling around their knees and began vomiting. They were rushed to a nearby hospital but on thorough examination the Doctor said that there had been no snake bite or poison in the food. There after they gave up both cooking and eating non-vegetarian. The workforce also emulated the same principle.
The labourers were advised to mix the Holy water of the temple brought from the fountain along with the bore-well water as it is the desire of the God. Whenever this instruction was disobeyed they found that the motor was not functioning even though there is no defect in the motor. And the mischievous person always found with some sort of problems. This incident also sent signals to the workforce to be truthful and faithful to the Gods work.
Sri. Gopal, who has immensely helped in the construction of the temple, also experienced such a wonderful miracle. He had given up hope that his sister would ever have a child because all doctors whom they consulted opined that she would be unable to have a child. However, on the advice of Sri. Perumal when they prayed to this Lord Shiva, she was blessed with a female child. Great! the Gods love is immeasurable.
Sri. Bharathi Kannan, a film producer and Sri. Anand Sharma, the Head Priest of Periyamalai Shiva Temple were also blessed with children when the prayed this Lord. In this a case also Doctors had opined that there was no chance for children.
A couple blessed with 2 children tragically lost both boys in an accident. Their father was admitted in hospital in coma stage. When he came to know the death of his children he resigned his job out of desperation. He last interest in life and stopped going to temple as he developed a hatred ness. Chance made him to meet Sri. I.R.Perumal who told the man, upon hearing his story that if he offers prayers to the Shiva at Injimedu then he would again be blessed with children. The villagers did not believe this could happen as the man and his wife had both undergone a family planning operation. Despite this however, when they began praying to Shiva as stated, they did have two children now and regularly become the staunch devotees of Lord Shiva of Periyamalai.
